Are you an iSheep? Hate to admit I am....never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would master the world of technology! Recently at a niece's 30th birthday, my Sister Ambler and I were checking our phones for an address, taking and sharing photos and updating Facebook. One of the younger ones there (anything under 50 is younger!) looked at us both and said " look at you two, sooo savvy!!
Take today for example:
I was listening to my iPod, I could choose from the 13,000+ songs (Ms Ambler is a music buff), or a playlist, by genre, album or artist.....today I thought just let the music play on! So a mix of classical, ACDC, Archie Roach, Simply Red and Abba filled the house.
I then had to check in for my flight to Queensland (of course a reminder was sent to my iPhone reminding me). I filled in all the details, picked my seat....oooh did I tell you I'm flying business class...not my doing I was upgraded...never happened to me before... and the system proceeded to tell me I am checked in. It then sent a message to my phone confirming my check in and all I had to do was save it to my Passbook, of course that's an app on my phone, as my electronic boarding pass!
Over to my iPad to check emails, Facebook and Pinterest, this was while my MacBook Pro was charging! And now on my computer updating my blog, editing photos and surfing the net!
What did we do before we had all this technology? We wrote letters and waited with anticipation at the mailbox for the postman to bring us a return letter. I still wait for the postman and love it when I get mail or a package! I wrote to an Aunty last week; I had collected wool for her, thats about all she can do these days....well by the time I finished writing my hand was in a tizz....cramps galore....I must say that my handwriting has gone down hill as well. I know that she will love the little card I selected and will savour the words and will hopefully send me a letter back!
We went to the library to research. I actually went there last week to have a look at some microfilm related to births, deaths and marriages to check family tree information (more on researching your family tree later). I was in awe at the beautiful writing, the books the information was kept in and attention to detail...I felt like I could smell the paper and the ink!
We talked to each other.....I remember a time when your neighbour was your best friend, your counsellor, your sharer of recipes....you would have a cup of tea, chat, share and care.
You know what, technology for me connects me with the world. I'm never sure where my day will take me....I talk to my Amblers, friends and family, I search for that wool to get a good price to keep my Aunty knitting for the homeless, I share my thoughts and I bring to life my ancestors and their stories.
We all need to feel connected, we connect through telling and sharing stories......I think the following quote from Phillip Pullman ( http://www.philip-pullman.com )
“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”
Until next time....
